Colonial War and Mental Disorders

This piece is part of an extended work based on the book “The Wretched of the Earth” by Frantz Fanon.
The book analyses the Complexity of Colonialism and presents the necessary need for a violent struggle to end occupation.

In his book, Fanon deals, among other things, with the influence of colonialism on the mental condition of both colonisers and colonised.

Colonialism is a disease of reality itself.
The disease as a condition rearranges reality according to distorted principles, which we find hard to understand to the core.

From the cases that Fanon presents and analyses in his book, we have extracted fragments that reflect these distortions. Here is case #3:

"So why are there only Algerians in prison?
How do you explain that?..."

"...We were not angry with him. Every Thursday we used to go and hunt together with a slingshot up on the hill behind the village. He was our best friend. He had left school because he wanted to become a mason like his father. One day we decided to kill him because the Europeans want to kill all the Arabs. We can’t kill the grownups but we can kill someone like him because he is our own age..."

"He used to play with us. Another boy would not have gone up the hill with us."

Soundinista Meira Asher's work has been released on Crammed, Sub Rosa and Auditorium. Her visionary early voice based albums from the 1990s were too forward thinking and challenging for the Israeli audiences of the period, but after her departure to Europe they attained cult status.

She Studied Tabla and Dhrupad in Varanasi-India, and traditional drumming, voice and dance of the Ga, Eve and Dagomba people of Ghana, both of which she later taught and performed. She attained a BFA in percussion at California Institute of the Arts (1990). She completed her Masters in Sonology at the Royal Conservatory, The Hague (2002).

Her areas inc. HR intervention, social documentary, radio art, and the expression/transition of traditional rhythms in/to contemporary music.

Projects inc. Spears into Hooks (album and performance about the Israeli occupation of Palestine 1999), Infantry (album and performance with Guy Harries, about child manipulation and child soldiers 2001), Face_WSLOT (album, book, art installation, and documentary film on female ex-child combatants in Sierra Leone 2004-06), One blanket lost (radioart piece about girls trafficking to Europe 2010), and Myelination 2 (album and performance with Jean-Claude Jones about Multiple Sclerosis and the myelin sheath 2013).

Eran Sachs works as composer, improviser, sound-artist and curator in Jerusalem and Jaffa. Originally coming from a classical background, he turned his attention towards Metal and Modern music, and started performing at the age of 14. Alongside musicians such as Tim Hodgkinson, guitarist Stephen O’Malley and percussionist Steve Noble, Sachs is a member of the International Hyperion Ensemble, which revolves around the works of the Romanian composers Iancu Dumitrescu and Ana Maria Avram. As an improviser Sachs has collaborated with Philip Jeck, Keith Rowe, Christoph Heeman, Oren Ambarchi, Fritz Welch, Tamio Shiriashi & Mico, Daniel Padden, Dylan Nyoukis/Blood Stereo, Adam Bohman, Usurper, Mattin, C. Spencer Yeh, Thomas Koener, Arnaud Riviere, Valerio Tricolli, Sophie Angel, Marc Behrens, Achim Wollscheid, Damon Smith, Birgit Ulher, Robert Piotrowicz, Peter Jacquemyn, @c, Eric Boros, Eyal Maoz and many others, mainly playing his self-developed system, the No-Input-Mixer, which he has been playing since 1998. He plays this machine regularly in the Doom-Dub-Noise outfits Cadaver Eyes (whose previous album was recorded on the Brian Turner Show @ WFMU), Special Olympics and Lietterschpich (whose debut album was labeled “Noise album of the Year” by Aquarius Records in SF). One of Cadaver Eyes' tracks has been released recently on a compilation by WMFU alongside such artists as Mudhoney, Circle, Half Japanese, The Ex, Steve Mackay and others. He also takes place regularly in John Zorn's "Cobra" improvising ensemble in Israel.

Sachs holds an MFA from Bard College, NY, where his teachers included David Behrman, Richard Teitelbaum, Maryanne Amacher, Anthony Coleman, Bob Bielecki, Amy Silman, Ann Lauterbach, Luca Buvoli, Peter Ablinger and Tony Conrad.

While there he founded a summer festival called THRICE, which ran for three years and featured artists like Bryan Eubanks, Bonnie Jones, Andrew Lampert, Vic Rawlings, Laetitia Sounami, Matana Roberts and many others. He also attended workshops with Alvin Lucier, La Monte Young and Pauline Oliveros.

He has presented his works, lectures and compositions in such festivals as Sonic Protest (Paris), Sonorities (Belfast), Transmediale/CTM (Berlin), Festival for Jewish Culture (Krakow), Theaterformen (Hannover), Musica Genera (Sczeczin) and Skanu Mesz (Riga) as well as spaces and platforms such as Sonic Square, RecycleArt (Brusseles), Podewil, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, O Tannenbaum, M-12 (Berlin), Melkweg (Amsterdam), Issue Project Room, ITP-NYU “guest speaker” program at NYU, Death By Audio (NY), Kulturbunker (Cologne), Muffathalle (Munich), Worm (Rotterdam), Cave 12 (Genève), Café Oto, THE WIRE magazine (London), Upgrade!, Sonic Process, Heara, Israeli Cinemateques (Israel) and many others. His work Studio with sculptor Eytan Ronel was awarded the Excellence Award by the NY International Fringe Festival in 2001. He also has collaborated extensively with sound artist Sebastian Meissner (Klimek, Random INC.), with whom he has released “Into The Void” (on Sub Rosa), a reflection on the old abandoned Jewish quarter Kazimierz in the city of Krakow. His works have been released on Mille Plateaux and Sub-Rosa and, as well as various labels in Israel.
