Voice and text : Saadet Türköz
Music : Başar Ünder, Zeynep Sarıkartal

from Uchronia, released March 11, 2018
Saadet Türköz is an improvisational vocalist. Born in Istanbul to parents who were Kazakh refugees from East Turkestan (Xinjiang , Uyghur Autonomous Region in China), Türköz learned the rich oral and musical traditions of Central Asia from the elderly people of the Kazakh community in Istanbul . She was strongly influenced by the tales of their homeland, the long journey to Turkey, etc. Those tales became later an imaginative source for her improvisational singing. The Koran that she listened to as a child has also been a source of influence. Its Arabic sound and melodious text gave her the first opportunity to improvise freely without paying attention to  the  correct  meaning  of  the  beautiful  language.
At the age of 20, she moved to Zurich, where she experienced a new music world : free jazz, improvisation, and an experimental and unbiased approach to her musical roots. Currently based in Zurich, she is active in giving solo concerts, as well as performances with other musicians, in different countries. The musicians she has collaborated with include Martin Schuetz, Hans Hassler, Elliot Sharp, Eyvind Kang, Peter Kowald, Lellio Gianetti, Okkyung Lee, the Koch-Schütz-Studer Trio, Fred Frith, Carl Stone, Xu Feng Shia, Peggy Lee, Michiyo Yagi, Koichi Makigami, Korhan Erel, and many other.

Zeynep Sarıkartal (born 1985, Ankara) is a sound artist, musician and musicologist. She studied classical piano in Ankara (with Ibrahim Yazici, Emre Sen, Mahir Cetiz, Gamze Kirtil and Yapincak Gürerk), had her bachelor degree from Yildiz Technical University in Istanbul in musicology/audio-design, under the supervision of Alper Maral. She took part in the contemporary music ensemble Karınca Kabilesi as pianist, joined several concerts and festivals in Istanbul between 2003-2006. Between 2010-2014 she worked with Gerhard Kubik at the University of Vienna on the subject of musical sticks/bows of south-eastern Africa. She is a member of the independent music label/collective Robonima. She took part in the project 2/5 Bz (Serhat Köksal) between 2014-2016 and made small tours in Berlin, Amsterdam, Tilburg, Hamburg, Batman, Istanbul, Vienna and joined festivals such as Fusion Festival, Noise Angriff, transmediale. From 2015 on she started to focus on free improvisation with electro-acoustic and noise, especially in form of performative/dramatical musical action. In 2016 she realised a music theatre project (together with Santo and Till Krappmann, Magdalena Springer and Dominik Painsi among many others). Recently she joined Y.T.Ü. Elektronik Müzik Festivali, Multiraid and 10 Jahre Moozak (together with Vienna Improvisers Orchestra). Presently, she lives and works in Vienna as a composer/musician/sound artist in theatre, film and multimedia projects, performs under the moniker ZS ZS, organizes music events (Red-out, Panzerschokolade, Exogenesis) and conducts her PhD research on Anthropology of Arts at the University of Fine Arts in Vienna.

Başar Ünder was born in Istanbul, on February 11, 1984. He studied Sociology before getting an MA in Sound Engineering and Design in Istanbul Technical University – Center for Advanced Studies in Music (MIAM). He is currently conducting his doctoral research on sound arts at the same department. In 2006, Başar was invited to Institut International de Musique Electroacoustique de Bourges (IMEB) as a resident composer, which was funded by UNESCO Aschberg Bursaries for Artists. The outcome of this residency, Mikro-Alem, was played in several festivals including Synthèse, and in concerts given in Europe and Turkey. Apart from his academic studies, Başar works as a full time sound designer/engineer, composer, performer in his own boutique sound design and music production studio Sonik Butik, based in Istanbul, where he has been designing sounds and composing music for film, games, interactive media, commercials etc.
